A list of dating do's and don'ts

By Love and Relationships Staff

So you've finally landed a date with that uber-cute girl or guy you've been wanting to ask out for ages. What is the best approach? Should you come on strong or play it cool? Here are a few answers to those questions and more.

It's quite normal to be nervous on a first date, in fact it's quite possible your date has a case of the jitters as well. If you can't hide it, don't be afraid to come on out and admit it. It can break the tension that can ruin a date and you can both have a good laugh about it. Some women even find that trait in their men endearing and men in turn appreciate honesty.

Don't be afraid to ask questions but also take heed not to dominate the conversation. It's important to show interest in your date but not to overdo it. Almost everyone who has dated has horror stories where their dates talked non-stop for hours. Obviously, those people won't be getting a 2nd date. Find a delicate balance between talking too much and not showing any interest and you'll be much more likely to land a 2nd date if you desire.

Even more important than talking and showing interest is listening. Allow your dates to talk about themselves without always steering the conversation back to yourself and you're more likely to secure another date. Be sure and listen to what your date says and make sure they know you're listening by nodding in agreement or verbally acknowledging them. Also be sure to have a positive attitude. Almost everyone has a mean boss and a jerk for an ex and it's very doubtful your date wants to hear about it.

Another thing to keep to yourself on a first date is the subject of children. If you have children don't tell, and it's also best not to ask either. But if you are asked, honesty is the best policy, but leave the other parent out of the discussion.

Some of the never-do's on a date include drinking too much and being a slob at the dinner table. Drunks are never good dates and if you're a slob at the table your date will wonder how much this habit spills over to other parts of your life. Never talk about your old boyfriend or girlfriend and don't make a pass for sex on the first date if you care to have a second one.

Using these common sense tips can help a person to have more fun at the relationship game and help you to find that someone special that you're looking for and keep them.
